Discovery Week at Manford

The week of the 22nd of March was Discovery week at Manford.
We decided to take this opportunity to allow the children to revise their knowledge of Science and develop their thinking and team working skills. We gave the children a scenario; Imagine you are travelling on an aeroplane when suddenly, your plane crashes. You try to swim to safety and find yourself stranded on a desert island.
The children needed to work together to solve a variety of problems while staying on the island.
The problems included: Building a bridge to cross the raging waters, Building a tall structure to pick the fruit from the trees, Make a boat strong enough to carry one person and nice water pots.
The children had great fun and have even asked if they can do it again!

On Thursday, 11th of March 2010, Year 6 went to St Paul's Church in Hainault for a Life Exhibition.

The children learnt about the birth and death of Jesus and stories from the Bible. They also had to answer questions using a PDA, which all the children enjoyed using.

Art Workshop with Sharon Drew

On Monday, 1st March and Wednesday, 3rd of March, Year 6 were very fortunate to work with the Artist Sharon Drew and her husband Mark on a piece of sculpture that would become a permenant fixture in the school.
The topic of the sculpture linked in with the History topic covered in Year 6: World War II. We decided to focus on the theme of Evacuation. As you can see, Sharon and Mark had began preparing the main sculptures beforehand as we only had two days with them. The children helped add facial features, clothes and evacuation tags to the sculptures.
They also made their own mask from clay and mod-roc. The children have thoroughly enjoyed working with Sharon and Mark and are very excited about seeing the final product.... Watch this space!

World War 2 Trip

On Thursday, 10th December, Year 6 went on a trip into London to visit the Britain at War Museum and HMS Belfast.

We set off straight away after registration to Hainault tube station where we caught a tube to London Bridge. It was very busy but the teachers made sure we were all safely on the trains!

Once we arrived at London Bridge, our first stop was the Britain at War Museum. We were all very excited as we have thoroughly enjoyed learning about World War 2 in class. However, when we arrived at the museum we couldn't go in.... they had had a power cut! The man that worked at the museum told us to go into Hayes Galleria and have an early lunch. It was an early lunch.... it was only 11.10am!!

After half an hour we were told that the power was back on and we could go into the museum.

It was great! We watched a video about the effects of World War 2 in Britain, during and after and then we explored! We went into an Anderson Shelter (some of us found it scary because it was so dark and all we could hear were loud aeroplanes and bombs!). We also got to dress up in German uniforms, British soldiers uniforms, it was great.

Next, we moved onto HMS Belfast. It was amazing! When we first went aboard the war ship, we had to wait for someone to come and take us to the school room. There we were told how the HMS Belfast helped our allies in the war and how the boat itself survived.
Then we were allowed to explore the ship. It was fascinating! They had a dentist, a hospital, a butchers, a shop, a bakers.... they had everything onboard!
It was very cramped though. The men would sleep in a hammock and there would often be up to 100 in the one room.

It was a brilliant day out, and we learnt lots! Here are some pictures of our day out.
