Year 6 do the Apprentice!

Manford's Big Bounce!
26th June was Inflatable Day / Summer Fete at the school.

During the day, the children were allowed to go on the inflatables for an hour .... better than a Literacy lesson I suppose! Year 6 had a great time jumping on the castles, racing through the obstacle courses, and getting stuck in the pirate ship.

After school, the year group ran their own stalls at the summer fete as part of the Yr6 Apprentice Challenge. The children had to set up and run their own business. All children worked hard during the week leading up to the fete and especially hard on the day. They all thoroughly enjoyed it and even made a profit!

Well done Yr 6, we are very proud of you.

Here are some pictures of the children on the inflatables:

Groovy 1960's Day!

1960's Day!

On June 23rd, Year 6 held a '60's day.

The day involved learning about and creating their own Popart, a 60's disco and a visit from John Lennon (an actor from Freshwater Theatre Company)!

The John Lennon visit allowed the children to learn about John Lennon, The Beatles and how influential music was to the youth of the '60's.

A great day was had by all!

Cycling at Redbridge Cycling Centre

Have you heard about the new cycling centre that is in Hainault? Have you been there?

The Redbridge Cycling Centre is the most exciting new leisure facillity for cyclists in Essex and London. It has purpose built road and off road tracks.
15 children from Year 6 were lucky enough to have been choosen to go to there for two hours (17th June 2009). They were accompanied by Mr Bowsher, Ann and Luke. They had a great time, although they did find it very tiring and came back to school ready for a sleep... and that was just the adults!

Here are some photos to show you what a great time they had!

Look... No hands!

Could these be Britain's Gold medal winners for 2012?

All this cycling is thirsty work!

Feeling a bit tired Reece?

Canoeing and Sailing at Fairlop Waters

Lucky Old Year 6!
During the Summer term, Year 6 were very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to have weekly sailing / canoeing lessons at Fairlop Waters.

6J go on a Monday afternoon to take part in sailing lessons and 6S go on a Friday afternoon to learn how to steer a canoe.

The children of 6J have enjoyed learning how to rig up a small and large sail to a boat and also how to sail it. There have been a couple of weeks where the children have not been able to sail, however they have enjoyed bellboating and learning new skills.

6S have had a great time working as a team at canoeing.

The first week, the children had to work as a team on the bellboats. It resulted in a huge water fight between the two boats but they worked well and managed to steer the bellboat back to shore!

During the other visits, the children had to work in teams of three to steer a KanKan. These were far riskier.... a number of children fell in the water! The instructors at Fairlop Waters had the children to stand up and sing 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes'. They had to jump when it came to the word toes! They also had to swap over to another KanKan. A few children found this quite frightening!

A great time was had by all, as you can see by the pictures:

Year 6 Booster Classes

During the run up to the SAT's, Year 6 have been taking part in extra fun sessions of Literacy, Numeracy and Science, after and before school.

These sessions are to help 'boost' their confidence and ability in these subjects a little more, in preparation for the tests in May. The teachers that hold the Booster classes ensure they are an hour of fun learning rather than a boring lesson!

The Booster sessions are:

ICT (Literacy, Numeracy and Science Revision) - Tuesday 3:20pm - 4: 20pm - Mrs Carleton
Literacy - Wednesday 3:20pm - 4:20pm - Mrs James
Numeracy - Thursday 8:15am - 9:15am - Mr Bowsher
Literacy - Thursday 3:20pm - 4:20pm - Miss Simmonds

This week's Literacy booster ( 25th and 26th March 2009),concentrated on the genre of Interviews. We re-capped on the features of an interview. They thought of informal questions they wanted to ask David Beckham and formal questions that they could ask the Queen or Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Once they had completed this task, the main task was to prepare and film an interview!
The children had to choose to interview: Peggy Mitchell, David Tennant, Jade Goody or Gordon Brown. They had to think of open ended questions to ask and also think of the answers.

Here are a few examples of the interviews filmed... Live!!!
